Sustainability Initiatives

  • Campus Potager: Turns unused space on Concordia's downtown campus into vegetable gardens. Organic produce is made available to students, faculty, staff, and the public at large in the summer and fall.

  • City Farm School: An initiative to develop partnerships and expertise in urban agriculture on the island of Montréal.

    • Offers seminars, discussions, internship placements, volunteer opportunities and popular education style teach-ins on permaculture, organic crop planning, producing seedlings, mushroom cultivation, composting, pest management, organic plant nutrition, rain water harvesting, and other topics 

  • Concordia Farmer’s Market: Provides students and staff with a great selection of local and organic foods 

  • Concordia Food Coalition: A non-for-profit student-run organization concerned about the economic, ecological, and social implications of the food system at Concordia University

  • Concordia Greenhouse: An all-organic space geared towards community, education and sustainable horticulture while providing alternatives to mainstream consumerism

  • Hive Cafe Solidarity Co-Operative: Offers locally & ethical sourced, healthy, affordable, and delicious food options, including free vegan, nut-free lunch on select weekdays

    • Solidarity Food Movement: a pay-it-forward food initiative where members of the community can purchase food items in advance for other members to request later

  • People’s Potato: A collectively-run soup kitchen that offers vegan meals to students and community members on a by-donation basis. Also provides workshops on healthy cooking and food politics.

  • Fair Trade Steering Committee: Formalizes and continues to build commitment to fair trade by increasing the availability of fair trade products and expanding discussion on social sustainability

  • Food Advisory Working Group: A multi-stakeholder group, coordinated through the Office of VP Services, that meets every Fall and Winter semester to share ideas and set targets that better serve the Concordia community.

  • Student Emergency and Food Fund: Provides emergency support to students in need through grocery store gift cards via a digital or in-person process, available to any registered Concordia student

  • Concordia Food Services’ Emergency Meal Vouchers: Concordia Food Services provides flex dollars applicable at all their cafés and at the Buzz Dining Hall for students who are in emergency situations. 

  • Le Frigo Vert: A non-profit health food store which offers a variety of organic and bulk foods, as well as quick snacks, coffee and environmentally friendly household products at affordable prices

  • Midnight Kitchen: A volunteer run collective to increase food accessibility in various ways.

    • Solidarity Servings: Free catering by application for certain events

    • Emergency Grocery Card Program: A one-time electronic gift card is offered on application to McGill students

    • Discretionary funding requests for events and projects as well as educational events on food security and development

    • Seasonal garden: An space for food access programming and food redistribution

Université de Montreal

  • Banque Alimentaire (Food Bank): Provides weekly free food distribution to students in need. Also offers baskets made up of dry products, dairy products, fruits, vegetables, etc.
